Supplement
Bilobalide
SaveA sesquiterpene trilactone unique to Ginkgo biloba, contributing to its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects in the CNS.
Quick verdict
Generally consumed as part of standardised Ginkgo biloba extract rather than in isolation. Individual supplementation is rare and unnecessary.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
Demonstrates mitochondrial protection and anti-edema effects in animal brain injury models. Part of the terpene lactone fraction (typically 2.8–3.4% in standard EGb 761 extract). Isolated bilobalide studies in humans are absent.
Benefits
- Neuroprotective in animal ischaemia models
- Anti-inflammatory in CNS tissue
- Part of well-studied ginkgo extract
Dosage notes
Typically consumed via standardised Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) at 120–240 mg/day providing ~3% terpene lactones.
Side effects
- Bleeding risk (as part of ginkgo)
- Headache
- GI upset
Who should be cautious
Ginkgo products can increase bleeding risk. Raw ginkgo seeds contain ginkgotoxin (not present in standardised leaf extracts).
What this page cannot tell you
Studied only as a component of whole ginkgo extract. Attributing effects specifically to bilobalide vs other ginkgo compounds is difficult.
