Supplement
Chitosan
SaveA polysaccharide derived from crustacean shells that binds dietary fat in the GI tract, reducing fat absorption. Marketed as a weight-loss aid.
Quick verdict
Meta-analyses show statistically significant but clinically trivial fat-binding effects. Not a meaningful weight-loss intervention on its own.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
Cochrane review found average weight loss of ~1.7 kg over 4 weeks vs placebo—barely clinically relevant. Fat-binding capacity in vivo is much lower than in vitro claims. Minimal effect on lipid panels.
Benefits
- Binds some dietary fat in the GI tract
- Statistically significant but small weight-loss effect
- May modestly reduce dietary fat absorption
Dosage notes
1–3 g before fat-containing meals. Take fat-soluble vitamins and medications at a separate time.
Side effects
- GI discomfort
- Constipation
- Reduced fat-soluble vitamin absorption
Who should be cautious
Shellfish allergy is a contraindication. May reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and medications.
What this page cannot tell you
The theoretical fat-binding mechanism is real but the in vivo effect is small. Marketing greatly overstates efficacy.
