Supplement
D-chiro-inositol
SaveAn inositol isomer involved in insulin signalling, studied primarily in PCOS for improving insulin sensitivity and ovulatory function.
Quick verdict
Evidence in PCOS is positive, especially in combination with myo-inositol (40:1 ratio). Not well-studied outside of PCOS populations.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
Nestler et al. 1999 showed improved insulin sensitivity and ovulation in PCOS. Current consensus favours a 40:1 myo-inositol:D-chiro-inositol ratio. Excessive DCI alone may impair oocyte quality.
Benefits
- Improves insulin sensitivity in PCOS
- Supports ovulatory function
- Complementary to myo-inositol at 40:1 ratio
Dosage notes
13.8 mg twice daily alongside 2000 mg myo-inositol twice daily (40:1 ratio). Higher DCI-only doses are not recommended.
Side effects
- GI discomfort at high doses
- Possible oocyte quality impairment if DCI-only
Who should be cautious
High-dose DCI alone may worsen oocyte quality in PCOS. Should typically be used in ratio with myo-inositol.
What this page cannot tell you
Most evidence is specific to PCOS. Insulin-sensitising benefits in non-PCOS populations are not well-established.
