Supplement
DGL
SaveDeglycyrrhizinated licorice, processed to remove glycyrrhizin to avoid aldosterone-related side effects while retaining mucosal-protective properties.
Quick verdict
A reasonable herbal option for mild dyspepsia and oral ulcers. Removing glycyrrhizin eliminates the blood pressure concerns of regular licorice.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
Older trials show benefit for functional dyspepsia and aphthous ulcers. DGL stimulates mucin production and may support mucosal blood flow. Evidence quality is generally low with small sample sizes.
Benefits
- Stimulates protective mucin production
- Safe form of licorice for GI support
- May aid oral ulcer healing
Dosage notes
380–760 mg chewed 20 minutes before meals, 2–3 times daily.
Side effects
- Mild GI discomfort
- Taste may be off-putting
Who should be cautious
Ensure the product is truly deglycyrrhizinated. Some products retain significant glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure and cause hypokalaemia.
What this page cannot tell you
Most studies are old and methodologically limited. DGL is not a substitute for H. pylori eradication or PPI therapy when clinically indicated.
