Immunoglobulins
SaveAntibody proteins derived from bovine colostrum or serum. Oral immunoglobulins may support gut barrier function and immune defense in the GI tract.
Quick verdict
Moderate evidence for GI immune support, particularly in IBS-D and gut barrier dysfunction. Serum-derived bovine immunoglobulins (SBI) have the most clinical data.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
Serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolate (SBI, as EnteraGam) has shown benefit in IBS-diarrhea and HIV-associated enteropathy in clinical trials. Immunoglobulins bind microbial antigens in the gut lumen, reducing immune activation. Colostrum-derived immunoglobulins have additional growth factors.
Benefits
- Supports gut barrier function and reduces intestinal inflammation
- Binds microbial antigens in the GI tract
- May reduce diarrhea in IBS and immune-compromised patients
Dosage notes
SBI (EnteraGam): 5 g twice daily as a medical food. Colostrum: 10-20 g daily for immunoglobulin content.
Side effects
- Mild GI bloating
- Constipation in some users
- Rare allergic reactions in dairy-sensitive individuals
Who should be cautious
Derived from bovine sources; not suitable for those with cow milk protein allergy. Quality and immunoglobulin content vary between products.
What this page cannot tell you
Most rigorous data is from the medical food EnteraGam rather than general supplements. Colostrum products vary in immunoglobulin concentration.
