Supplement
Laminarin
SaveA beta-glucan polysaccharide from brown seaweed (kelp). Studied for immune modulation, prebiotic effects, and potential anti-tumor properties in preclinical research.
Quick verdict
Interesting preclinical immune-modulating and prebiotic properties, but human clinical data is very limited. Better studied in animal nutrition than human supplementation.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
Laminarin activates innate immune cells via Dectin-1 receptor binding (beta-glucan pathway). It shows prebiotic effects and anti-tumor activity in animal models. Extensively used in animal feed for gut health. Human clinical trials are scarce.
Benefits
- Activates innate immunity via beta-glucan receptor
- Prebiotic effects supporting gut microbiome
- Anti-tumor activity in preclinical models
Dosage notes
No established human dose. Animal studies use varying concentrations of seaweed-derived extracts.
Side effects
- Potential iodine excess from seaweed source
- GI bloating
- Unknown long-term safety profile
Who should be cautious
May contain iodine from seaweed source; caution with thyroid conditions. Potential for heavy metal contamination depending on seaweed source.
What this page cannot tell you
Most evidence is from animal studies and in vitro work. Human supplementation data is nearly nonexistent. Other beta-glucans (from yeast, mushrooms) have more human evidence.
