Lumbrokinase
SaveA fibrinolytic enzyme complex derived from earthworms. Used in traditional Chinese medicine and studied for its ability to break down fibrin and support cardiovascular health.
Quick verdict
Preliminary evidence for fibrinolytic activity, primarily from Asian clinical studies of variable quality. Less data than nattokinase but may be more potent per unit.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
Lumbrokinase demonstrates fibrinolytic activity by activating plasminogen and directly degrading fibrin. Chinese clinical studies suggest benefit for stroke recovery and deep vein thrombosis. However, most studies are small, not blinded, and published in Chinese-language journals, limiting external validation.
Benefits
- Potent fibrinolytic activity in vitro and in animal models
- May support healthy blood viscosity and circulation
- Used traditionally for cardiovascular support
Dosage notes
Typical doses: 20-40 mg (or 200,000-400,000 units) daily in divided doses on an empty stomach. Standardization varies between products.
Side effects
- Increased bleeding risk
- GI discomfort
- Allergic reactions possible
Who should be cautious
Significant bleeding risk, especially with anticoagulants. Should be discontinued before surgery. Not for use in active bleeding disorders.
What this page cannot tell you
Quality of published clinical evidence is generally low by Western standards. Product standardization is challenging. Direct comparison with nattokinase is limited.
