Supplement
Lutein
SaveA carotenoid that accumulates in the macula of the eye, providing protection against blue light and oxidative damage. One of the best-studied nutrients for age-related macular degeneration.
Quick verdict
Strong evidence from the AREDS2 trial for reducing progression of age-related macular degeneration. One of the most well-supported eye health supplements.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
The AREDS2 trial demonstrated that lutein (10 mg) plus zeaxanthin (2 mg) was a suitable and safer replacement for beta-carotene in the AREDS formula for AMD prevention. Observational studies consistently link higher lutein intake with reduced AMD and cataract risk. Emerging evidence suggests cognitive benefits via increased macular pigment optical density.
Benefits
- Reduces AMD progression (AREDS2 evidence)
- Filters blue light and protects retinal cells
- May support cognitive function in older adults
Dosage notes
10 mg lutein daily (AREDS2 dose), ideally with a fat-containing meal for absorption. Often paired with 2 mg zeaxanthin.
Side effects
- Very well-tolerated
- Mild yellowing of skin at very high chronic doses (harmless carotenodermia)
Who should be cautious
Well-tolerated. Those who smoke should prefer lutein over beta-carotene for eye health supplementation.
What this page cannot tell you
Benefits are best established for AMD progression prevention, not necessarily primary prevention. Cognitive benefits are emerging but not yet definitive.
