Supplement
Lysine
SaveAn essential amino acid important for collagen synthesis, calcium absorption, and immune function. Best known for its use in managing herpes simplex virus outbreaks.
Quick verdict
Moderate evidence for reducing herpes simplex recurrence frequency. Otherwise an essential amino acid with importance primarily when dietary intake is inadequate.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
Lysine competes with arginine for absorption and may reduce HSV replication by lowering intracellular arginine. Several older trials show reduced HSV recurrence at 1-3 g/day, though study quality is variable. Also important for collagen synthesis, carnitine production, and calcium absorption.
Benefits
- May reduce frequency and severity of herpes simplex outbreaks
- Essential for collagen synthesis and tissue repair
- Supports calcium absorption and carnitine production
Dosage notes
For HSV prevention: 1000-3000 mg daily. General supplementation: 500-1000 mg daily. Best taken on empty stomach away from arginine-rich foods.
Side effects
- GI discomfort at high doses
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal cramps
Who should be cautious
High doses may increase calcium absorption excessively. Theoretical concern about increased cholesterol via carnitine pathway. Avoid in those with hyperlysinemia.
What this page cannot tell you
HSV evidence is based on older trials of moderate quality. Benefits for cold sores are modest and not universal. Most people consuming adequate protein are not lysine-deficient.
