Supplement
Silybin
SaveSilybin (silibinin) is the most active flavonolignan in milk thistle (silymarin), with hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and emerging anticancer properties.
Quick verdict
Best-studied component of milk thistle with solid evidence for liver protection. Phytosome forms dramatically improve bioavailability.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
Clinical trials support silymarin/silybin for alcoholic and non-alcoholic liver disease, hepatitis C adjunct therapy, and Amanita mushroom poisoning. Silybin phytosome (Siliphos) achieves 4–10x higher plasma levels.
Benefits
- Hepatoprotective and liver-regenerative
- Potent antioxidant in liver tissue
- Used in Amanita mushroom poisoning treatment
- Emerging anti-fibrotic properties
Dosage notes
Silybin phytosome: 120–240 mg twice daily. Standard silymarin: 420–600 mg daily.
Side effects
- Mild laxative effect
- GI discomfort
- Allergic reactions in ragweed-sensitive individuals
Who should be cautious
May lower blood sugar. Possible estrogenic effects at high doses. Interacts with CYP enzymes and UGT substrates.
What this page cannot tell you
Standard silymarin extract has poor bioavailability (~1%). Silybin phytosome is the preferred oral form.
