Supplement
Zeaxanthin
SaveZeaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment concentrated in the macula of the eye, where it filters blue light and provides antioxidant protection against age-related macular degeneration.
Quick verdict
Strong evidence from AREDS2 for slowing macular degeneration progression when combined with lutein. Standard of care for eye health.
Evidence score
A rough internal score reflecting quantity, quality, and consistency of human evidence. Not a clinical recommendation.
What the research shows
AREDS2 trial demonstrated that lutein/zeaxanthin (10 mg/2 mg) was as effective as beta-carotene for AMD progression and safer (no lung cancer risk in smokers). Macular pigment optical density is a validated biomarker.
Benefits
- Filters harmful blue light in the macula
- Reduces AMD progression (AREDS2)
- Supports macular pigment optical density
Dosage notes
2 mg daily (AREDS2 dose) combined with 10 mg lutein. Some supplements provide up to 4 mg.
Side effects
- Carotenemia at very high doses (harmless)
- Generally very well tolerated
Who should be cautious
Generally very safe. Carotenemia (yellow skin) at high doses is harmless and reversible.
What this page cannot tell you
Almost always studied in combination with lutein. Benefits are primarily for eye health, not systemic antioxidant use.
